I have a non-GL Westfalia Camper that seats six because I don't have a stove
or sink or the cabinet that goes on the drivers side but instead have a
full-width back seat and jump seat that is directly behind the driver. I
took it out the other day to remove my floor for cleaning and saw that the
jump seat's base is a simple metal box made out galvanized steel, then
covered with plastic panels to make it look nice. Four bolts hold the base
to the floor - captive nuts were welded in the channels and are flush with
the top of the channels. A 2" hole was cut through the plywood and vinyl
floor panel at each bolt location , then the base is bolted on top of the
floor panel. The seat bottom is hinged at the front and provides a storage
locker approximately 2' cubed under the seat.
Anyway, the whole jump seat looks suspiciously like something that came out
of a speedboat, you know the kind of seats that are back to back and then
both fold down to make a lounge chair. The foundation for the seat and
back is a 2' square sheet of 3/4" plywood with some 3" foam rubber and some
nice upholstery (heck, they even used staples) to cover it all up.
I guess what I'm trying to say, in way too many words, is that you could
build something similar to fit behind your passenger seat. My jump seat uses
a regular lap belt that mounts to the same points as the front seat belts. I
can try and take some pictures of mine and send them to you, but it really
is a simple VW/Westfalia design.
Anyway, I hope this helps, I would hate to see you sell your Vanagon for
lack of a seat.
Tim
