Before you tear the dash and airbox box apart, you might want to try this: Pull the floor vent cover off and cut some foam rubber blocks to fit inside the air channel to stop the airflow to those vents. I used some foam rubber and a sharp razor knife and I have no airflow anymore. If I need fresh air, I open the dash vents or the defroster vents. You can pull the foam out after summer (or never if you live in Florida). It only takes a couple of minutes to do.

Hey Group, boy do I miss those archives...

Since last summer, lots of fresh air has been coming in through the closed heater vents of my 84 westy. Usually, this isn't a problem, but as the outside temps get hotter and I use the AC, I think I am going to jump in and try to fix this. I have obtained the little clips needed to hold the air box together after I split it apart, and I have a free weekend to get it done. Anyone done this recently that has any warnings or advice? Any secrets to getting the dash off and the box out? I've read the recent thread on the steering column shear bolts. Hopefully, vise grips will do the trick for me too. Once the box is out, what do you use to replace the rotten foam seals? PepBoys carries a wide selection of what looks like houshold weather stripping. Will this work? And finally, what should I use to seal the box again. The VW parts guy didn't know what to recommend and the part number in the Bentley didn't help him. I'm thinking black RTV.

By the way, there must be a dozen or more Busses and Vanagons around Bloomington, IN. Any of their owners on the list?
