I also changed my 4th gear a few days ago, 1987 syncro westy. Stock rims and tires, rebuilt 2.1 WB. Original r and p. Went from 0.82 to 0.76 and am very happy with it. I reported this to the syncro list and had 2 - 3 responses from people who had not done this but said they wouldn't because they felt you would be out of the torque band. I don't find this the case at all and would do it again. Around town city driving is just fine. The 2.1 Water boxer seems to have bottom end torque, not high end HP. If I did an engine conversion Inline VW 4 or Subaru) it would be a different situation though.
