Mine fell off a week ago, but I noticed it as it happened (I was locking it before closing the door) and I picked it up from the curb. It's basically a threaded bolt with a black plastic cap on it. So if you experiment with the thread sizes, you can simply use a bolt. Now Rennie Wible already posted that it's only 10.50 from VW, so it's worth getting but at least you can use a bolt in the meantime if it has to come from a long distance.

And for the rest of us, we ought to check it to make sure it's tightened.
