Would someone please explain to me what the code on the radio and the lockup is all about...

Your radio disables itself if either it or the battery is removed. There is a sequence involving a 4 digit number that resets it (but not your presets). The number is in the radio supplement that came with your owner's manual. If you don't have the manual you'll have to pay the dealer to obtain the code for you.
