Hi Katy,

I've been traveling and I just got my Vanagon list mail turned back on so I missed earlier posts telling of your situation. However I wouldn't do anything hasty based on the factory gauge reading. Providing that the other systems are working correctly, consider the following:

If the aux fan is not coming on while driving-the coolant temp is OK, providing that the aux fan switch and motor function.

The cooling system does not push coolant out of the system into the expansion tank excluding the "normal" cold to hot expansion between the "min" & "max" marks on the tank.

There is NO low oil pressure warning, at hot idle and above 2,000 RPM again providing that the dynamic oil pressure warning system functions.

The engine starts, sounds and accelerates normally when hot.

I drive an '86 Syncro with a new exchange engine that runs two needle widths above the red LED and nothing is wrong. I also have $200 worth of digital gauges which indicate that the coolant & oil temps are fine in spite of what the original equipment gauge says.

Regards, John
