I thought I posted this message early this morning but now I don't see it,
so I'll describe what happened to my 80 Air Cooled Vanagon again.
I went to start it yesterday, after it sat for the weekend, only to notice
that is has a loud deep tapping sound. It's coming from 3&4 side of the
engine. I recently had my upper end rebuilt back in Nov 99. I dread that it
may be a rod knock. I can't afford any major repairs right now, do I was
hoping for another cheap explanation. I haven't checked anything on it,
except the oil, which is good.
Guess I'll be spending my free time and money on my Vanagon again. :o)
