Subject: 1.9l pushrod tube seals (repost from egroups)

Howdy,

In the quest for an oil-drip free Vanagon, I want to redo the pushrod tube seals on my 1.9l. It looks like the seals on the block side of the pushrods are not doing their job anymore. I have some questions for those of you who have done this one before.

Is there any reason to drain the oil before the job? I noticed that there are shields underneath the pushrod tubes which share a bolt/nut with some of the exhaust hangers. Any tips from those who have been there on tearing down to do this job?

This should be a dry application, right? No sealant, etc. just a form fit? Any advice about whether or not to go OEM vs. Viton? I know that the Vitons are recommended for aircooled pancakes where the heat can get excessive at times.

What holds the pushrod tubes in? I have a 1980 Vanagon where there is a convoluted wire which holds them in place. Do the rocker arms hold the wasserboxer's pushrod tubes in?

Finally, I remember that there was a thread on gerry not long ago concerning the preloading of the adjuster screws for the valve lifters. Does anybody remember the concensus? I seem to remember that Bob Donalds recommended something different from what is in the Bentley.

Thanks for any help,

John Haddad
