Subject: Wrap Up: Can't pass emissions
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

The final episode of my trying to pass emissions saga ended with a new airflow meter and a new set of ignition wires and plugs and a trip to a highly recommended garage in Phoenix.

I can't say for sure which bit did the trick. The shop said that they just tuned it up using the scope. The wires and plugs <looked> good, but I replaced them anyway. The old AFM checked out, but the dealer said I needed a new one for $580, but since I could get one for <much> less at Bus Depot I decided to go ahead and give it a try.

I replaced: 1. Throttle position switch. 2. Oxygen sensor. 3. Oil & filter. 4. Air filter. 5. Oil breather tower. 6. Distributor cap and rotor. 7. Thermostat. 8. Checked plug gap.

>hadn't passed yet<

9. AFM 10. Plugs & wires.

I repaired:

1. The electrical connector to the distributor. 2. The interference between the A/C bracket and the connector to the distributor.

note: Apparently, the connector had broken because it was bumping up against the A/C bracket. I fixed it using epoxy and fiberglass tape. I ground down the aluminium bracked using a rotary file on my drill motor.
