Patience, my dear, patience! It's just a mechanical device that is having a fault (pun intended).

Keep after it, you will find the problem. It might aggravate you to death for a while, but one fixed, it's not likely to happen again for a very long time. That is the time to enjoy the machine, not get rid of it. Why dispose of it right after you have spent the time, and the frustration to make it right. Again, enjoy it at that point.....and consider yourself educated in the ways of Vanagons.
