You don't need to remove this nut or flange to do the brakes on your '88. Just back off the shoes a little with a short or right angle screwdriver in the hole in the backing plate and remove the drum from the flange. It is a little tighter, but easily doable. The only time you need to remove this nut is to service the bearings, and I just rent a 3/4" drive electric impact wrench and socket (measure the nut for the inch equivalent socket). Makes short work out of this and costs about $25. I started doing this when even heat and a 5' breaker bar wouldn't bust one of these loose because the tire absorbs so much of the impact. -- Stuart MacMillan Seattle '84 Vanagon Westfalia '65 MGB (Driven since 1969) '74 MGB GT (Restoring) Assisting on Restoration: '72 MGB GT (Daughter's) '64 MGB (Son's) Parts cars: '68 & '73 MGB, '67 MGB GT |
