So true about Crutchfields size recommendations,

I have a Pioneer KEH-P7800 in my Vanagon that installed with no problems - but Crutchfield will tell you that it will not fit. My suggestion is that you measure the space yourself and go by your measurements.

Also, one other gotcha for those replacing the front speakers in the doors. It is quite common that aftermarket speaker grills will interfere with the window handles (for those without PW) and may hit the side of the dashboard. Make sure that you get speakers with very low height grills.

Lastly, if you have a Westy with the rear speakers in the rear A/C cabinet, you can open up these holes and place 5.25" speakers in the rear - but again, check the fit with the speaker grills as this is a very close fit.

I have the Polk EX series as replacements of the stock Blaupunk speakers and they just fit.
