Running hot? that is a bit subjective. A tick above the LED on the gauge is about normal. Anything much higher can be casued by a LOT of things.

Air in the system Faulty fan switch Thermostat problems Radiator problems Water pump problems etc.

I have driven my Syncro Westy in gridlocked traffic in tthe Central Valley of California in mid-July (~100 degrees F) with the AC on full blast, and never got much more than a needle's width higher than the LED. It seems like Vanagon cooling systems are pretty robust. (Of course the radiator fan runs continuously in these conditions!)
