You don't need to remove this nut or flange to do the brakes on your '88. Just back off the shoes a little with a short or right angle screwdriver in the hole in the backing plate and remove the drum from the flange. It is a little tighter, but easily doable.

The only time you need to remove this nut is to service the bearings, and I just rent a 3/4" drive electric impact wrench and socket (measure the nut for the inch equivalent socket). Makes short work out of this and costs about $25. I started doing this when even heat and a 5' breaker bar wouldn't bust one of these loose because the tire absorbs so much of the impact.
