Phil,

I once was in need of a fifth seat.  The VW dealers wanted something like
$1500 for it.   Here is what I did:
I went to a autowrecker and checked around.  Lo and behold, I found a
leather bucket seat in a wrecked minivan that matched up pretty good with
the colors in my 85 Westy.  It even had a lap seatbelt with it.  Took it out
and paid the yard $50 for it.  Of course it did not fit in the Westy, so
being handy with a welder, I fabricated a base out of steel plate and angle
iron, to screw into the 4 holes intended for the original 5th seat in the VW
van, then attached the seat to the base.    Painted the base the same color
as the interior, it now looks like it belongs.  It is easy to take out and
put in,  just needs a large screwdriver to do so.  It only cost me about
$75.  and is stronger than need be, as I tend to overbuild everything.
The kids love the seat, it is much more comfortable than the rest of the
vanagon seats.
