Subject: Friday: Kraut Festival

I'll be heading North from Georgia to Phelps, NY and the Saurkraut
Festival being held next week end, and every first week end in August
in lovely Phelps. Not much kraut produced there since Empire
Pickling pulled out a long time ago, but traditions die hard when
that is all you had. I grew up in the middle of the smell and hated
it then. Don't like the smell too much still, but do love the kraut
now. Phelps really is a touch of Americana and the parade on
Saturday is not to be missed. I'll be on Dan Fling's porch with the
usual cooler of beer to cheer on the fire engines and American Legion
Flag bearers, not to mention the twirlers and school band, etc. I'll
remember marching up that long hill to the fairgrounds in the August
heat trying to blow on a tenor sax, and the fun we had when we got
there and could take off the hot band uniforms. Life was simple then,
I think we who moved to the cities got our priorities wrong.
I'll also attend my 40th high school reunion that week end, so I've
got a lot of excitement ahead of me. Hope the old heart can take it.
Wonder if Flo will be there? Will she still be beautiful after 40
years?
Will be driving George up along Western NC through Ashville, follow
the Blue RIdge Pky some and maybe if things are really tight, get on
I-81 to Harrisburg, then North to Corning and Geneva, NY.
Any special park campgrounds along that route that can be
recommended? Hope to take 3-4 days to get there.
Didn't get my sticker yet, but I moved and they may not have my new
address and the forwarding is slow, so looks like I may be
un-stickered. George is Bronze-Beige 85 Westy, traveling slowly
along, enjoying the scenery, sneering at the trucks that blow him
around. I'll be on the look out for fellow vanagoneers.
Those in the Finger Lakes region of NY, head on over to Phelps
Saturday, August 5 for family fun galore. I know Daryl will be there
and maybe some of you Rochester guys can make it down.
Jim, in North Georgia w/ George, 85 Westy
