I use Mar-Hyde Semi-flat black spray paint. I use this all the time on 80s Mustangs I restore. Did wonders for my `87 Westy grills. Pop out the VW emblem before you use it. I did the mirrors and wipers at the same time too. I don't recommend flat, gloss or semi-gloss paint. You need "Satin" or "semi-flat". You can get it at most auto paint supply places.
