I had the 1.8 16V from a GTI in my 3rd conversion. Yes it was a little week at low rpm's but I would have to say the 2.0 has more low end. I'm in the final few nuts and bolts on replacing the clutch with KEP's stage 1 pp and gold disc. The torque was too much for a so called heavy duty pp and ridged disc. It would slip under off the line hard acceleration. For an all around engine conversion far as availability, installation, and future repair work I would still recommend an 8V, but the gas mileage and highway cruising/passing of the 16V so far has proven to be the best (for me) yet. Having the ability to pass on the highway or going with the flow of traffic and better gas mileage. What more could any of us ask for.

In my response to the questions on conversions please go to Tom Carringtons web site. http://volksweb.relitech.com/ I have a very different approach to engine conversions. I'm not rich and in no way a rocket scientist. But a jet powered funny Vanagon has been a thought.
