Your problem could also be rings. And that is what I would be most suspicious of.
With the engine shut down, and oil tending to seek the lowest point, it will seep
downward to the low point in the cylinder barrel, and pooling there, work its way
past the rings to some degree. On initial start up there will be sufficient oil in
the chanber to cause smoking for a few minutes.

Lat year my engine enperienced a piston failure. Early symptoms ---which I didn't
understand at the time -- were some smoke on startup, which would dissapear after
running a few minutes, then smoking heavily when going around a sustained curve at
a continuous rate of speed, such as an on or off ramp on a hiway. The centrifugal
loading tended to through more oil past the rings into the cylinder  that was
beginning to fail, causing heavy white smoke until I was out of the curve. Once on
the straightaway, the smoke disappeared.

I suggest you have a compression test done immediately. Properly done, you should
be able to distinguish between valve problems and ring problems.
