Yeah that's what I'm curious about. I wonder if the 84 configuration would work. Unfortunately I have no 84 in the area to compare to, to actually see if that would solve the problem. One could argue the present configuration has worked for the last almost 20 years--but I mean barely. From what I can see the set up is stock--no aftermarket hoses. Maybe it was trouble on many early vanagons and that's why they went to the "84" configuration.

I appreciate the information. Unfortuantely I'm strapped for time so I may just end up replacing what is stock for the early 83.5.
