Hi Raimund,

Another listee suggested using SAAB front calipers because they have a provision for parking brakes. Other rear calipers such as VW/Porsche 914 & VW GTI/GLI calipers also have the same provision. The 914 and GTI calipers seem too small for the job. Even though the rear brakes perform a lower percentage of the stopping, I would still like to have the extra margin of safety.

I am also considering using the 71-79 Type 2 front calipers. Wolfgang International offers a bracket for mounting these on the early vans. I have inquired with them if the mounts can be modified for use in the rear of the Vanagon. A similar system should work with any caliper that you are considering. I will let you know how this works out.

In this situation, you will need to have a separate system for your parking brakes. Wildwood and a few other "street rod" parts vendors offer spot calipers. These are small manual calipers which are mounted independently from your main braking systems. This would be where you would connect your parking brake cables.
