Do the ATF/MMO flush, but also, search the archive on "lifter +adjustment".
This has been discussed at length. The consensus: yes, you should adjust
your hydraulic lifters occasionally, and reset the preload to (some
disagreed here) to 1/2 turn, (180 degrees) instead of 2 turns (720 degrees)
the manual recommends. Boston Bob seemed to have some well-founded beliefs
on this matter.

Hi Volks,
I was at my buddy Gil's Air-Cooled shop the other day talking about my
upcoming cross country trip and I asked him about things (parts) that he
would advise bringing along. He mentioned valve cover gaskets. Then we
talked about popping in a new set before I take off. He was also
concerned about a slight mis-fire we kept hearing and suggested
adjusting the lifters. I said, "They are hydralic, they can't be
adjusted.". He and another air-cooled friend said they have adjusted
their hydralic lifters. We looked at the Bently, and sure enough they
have instuctions for adjusting lifters. However, I think that they are
talking about new lifters on install.
My question to the List is this; Should I do any of this work or am I
going to open up a potential can of worms a month before my trip. I
don't have any oil leaks around the heads or push rods and other than
the slight mis-fire everything seems fine. I do get the occassional
tapping lifter before warm up, but who doesn't? I'm planning on doing
the ATF clean and flush on my oil change before departure and feel
confident that this will cure my sticky lifter.
So what do you say? If it ain't broke don't fix it?
