Hello John,

>While there's a lot of discussion on the list regarding engine >conversions I thought I would take the opportunity to find out >if there is any one out there who has any knowledge and or >experience with the Audi 5 cylinder conversion.

I guess you already found my web site at http://volksweb.relitech.com/helmut

>Is the 5 Cyl conversion a "bad" conversion?

I guess not, there are several hundreds of 5 cylinder conversions on German roads. The problem in US is the unavailability of parts, I guess. Specially the engine mount and bellhousing are hard to get. Ken offered you a source, Detlev from California. He developed a kit which allows to mount the engine without raising the decklid.

Because of the number of different kind of engines you have to know about your 5 cylinder and how to connect the fuel system and electrical wiring. Everything else is straight forward. There is no major difference if you convert a WBX to a 4 or 5 cylinder inline.

If you go back three years in the Vanagon list archives you will find a lot of mails about the Audi conversion.
