Dan; I would hazard to guess your mechanic is not real familiar with flat four engines. It takes a lot of attention to detail to assemble a split case motor without getting a drip from one of several places. Unless it's real bad just think of it as your van "marking" it's territory. Else you can try to snug up the nuts but be careful not to over do it. It is easy to make things worse in this area i.e pulling out a stud or deforming the flat cover plate.
