Hi kids,

My 1984 Vanagon has had a noisy tranny since I bought it last April. It is noisy only under acceleration, quiet at speed and when coasting. Driving next to a concrete freeway divider with my driver window open, so the noise can reflect back at me, is scary. Sounds like the Dentist in the midst of grinding out a filling with his high speed drill!!

Last week I replaced my CV joints, inner and outer, both axles and guess what! The left outer was dry of grease!

What aimed me in this direction was a clicking sound that was occurring, now and then, when turning. It would go away for a while and then return. I figured it was a CV joint and, since I don't know the history of this Vanagon, I decided to replace all of them. The one CV joint that was dry was also the one that had one snapped off bolt and five loose!! I think that slop allowed the grease to get slinged out.

Anyway, my noise is greatly reduced!!

Just a thought.

Ron

My Agenda: Avoid Tourists. My Methods: Live down a remote logging road with a sheep gate at the top. Stay on the Blue highways. Cross into Baja at Tecate - not Tijuana. Only go to remote campsites at the end of rough roads. Only talk to people who don't smell like perfume and/or after shave. Carry DeLorme maps at all times. Keep my potato cannon handy. The Result: People think I'm a grump and a curmudgeon. Perfect! Find out more at: http://billionairesforbushorgore.com/
