Subject: Re: Switched power for vanagon radio--easy solution

Simply install a DPDT (double pole, double throw) rocker switch somewhere, I put mine in the dash next to the radio. Hook up the hot wire to one side of the switch, and the ignition switched wire to the other, then hook the radio power wire to both of the other poles. Then you can use the switch to turn the radio on and off when the ignition is off.

Did much the same with mine except I hooked one side up to the auxiliary battery. Normally, I have it switched so that the radio is powered through the ignition switch. But while camping, or otherwise wish to hear the radio without the ignition switch on, I can switch to the auxiliary battery with no fear of running the main battery dead. The radio I have installed came with a remote control! (Can't imagine why one would need a remote in a normal vehicle!) Now, while camped I can lay in bed and control the radio/tape/CD changer, changing from one mode to the other, controlling volume and turning the unit off all without leaving my comfy bed!
