Subject: Re: High altitude power loss

Sounds to me like it might be another manifestation of the infamous and dreaded "intermittent power loss" syndrome rearing it's ugly head, again. Sorry to have to admit, but, been there, done that and am currently working on the sequel. I am not sure which archival message you are referring to, but, I recently sprung for the price of a "wiring harness upgrade, genuine VW" from the Bus Depot. But w/ a price of $119.95 I do not believe that I would recommend it to you. It's basically nothing more than a very expensive 6" extension cord. Despite it's claim to the contrary, I do not see how this item can be of much real use expect maybe having to do with a very specific problem of a lack of length on your original wiring harness branch to the air flow meter. And if that were your problem, a hank of wire, few crimp fittings and a pair of crimp pliers would fix you right up for alot less bucks. My researches suggests to me that the ECU brains in the Vanagons are fairly rugged units and not easily damaged. Should only be suspected only after a careful examination and elimination of all other possible causes. One of the first things you might check-out is replacing the fuel filter and making sure your fuel pump is doing it's thing like it's suppose to. If you know you are getting fuel to the engine then that's at least half the equation penciled in for you. The most simple fix can sometimes be the most obvious. You wouldn't be the first one to get a load of crappy gas. If it gets more complicated than that let us know. Be happy to share more of the details of our own similar type problem and help walk you through a few minor testing procedures, if you like, to the extent that we are able to. Keep us posted.
