Regarding fuel pump buzz: It seems to me that all fuel pumps can be heard, some more than others at some times more than others. Usually you hear it more when you are subconsciously "on alert", such as when you are far from home. I just check fuel pressure to make sure it's OK to reassure myself, and then when I do go on a trip I carry a used but known good fuel pump along with me. You can buy an inexpensive oil pressure gauge, and a 2' length of rubber hose and a clamp at most any FLAPS for less than $20.00. This connects to the test point provided on the fuel line just to the rear of the air distributor manifold very easily. Just remove the little hex headed screw and washer, and slip the hose over the fitting. Tighten the clamp a bit, and you're ready to check the fuel pressure. Having a spare on hand means that probably the thing will not fail on the road for you, but if it does you will find that you forgot to put in a screwdriver & pliers, which is really all the tools you need to change the fuel pump.
