Subject: crazy engine conversion in Calgary
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

A guy showed up at our VW club show this weekend, and I noticed what was hanging below his rear bumper didn't look normal. I poked my head under there on the passenger side and saw an I-4 conversion. Further inspection of the driver's side showed and AiResearch turbo peeking down.

The guy is an Adui/Porsche mechanic and put the 1.8 out of a wrecked Scirocco. He added digital fuel injection (as opposed to the original Scirocco injection? CIS?) then added a bunch of parts from an Audi (inverted oil filter) and the turbo with some custom tubing. He also built some sort of sump on the bottom of the turbo (since it sits so low and won't drain) with a pump moving the oil out of it. He added a boost sensitive fuel enrichment module (from an Audi?) to it as well.

He had only had it running for 2 days and still had some odd fixes to do, but overall it looked good. He's only running 4 psi boost, and he said it goes like stink. He said the turbo is kind of big, so there's not much extra down low, but he says at typical driving RPMs, there's lots of extra power. I traded phone numbers with the guy and hopefully we'll be able to get together and I can get some pictures of it, take it for a drive, and get more details.

Cheers! Keith Adams Calgary, Alberta, Canada 1986 Vanagon GL Westfalia
