David-- I live on my boat and there are some amazing marine products that will solve for ever your stripped screw holes:

If you have access to West Marine or a similar chandlery-- you will find West (not related to West Marine itself) Systems Epoxy Resin and Hardener. The instructions for mixing a small quantity of Resin and Hardener is straight forward-- but once applied to the stripped out holes (i.e: fill 'em up completely with the epoxy mixture) and cured-- you can drill out the hole in a slightly smaller diameter than the screw and voila: you have some very good threads to grip.

No doubt there are several ways to skin that cat, but this one pops to mind first.
