When buiding my engine - I primed the lifers easily by "building" the lifer under oil, like the manula says. BUT instead of trying to compress the lifer with a type 1 pushrod by hand I used a small hydraulic press to push on a piece of type 1 pushrod. Takes only seconds. Was so quick and easy, I was almost scared that I mush be damaging the assembly.

I was surprised how much pressure it takes, I can't imagine trying to do this by hand. I kept the lifters imersed in oil in baby food jars, carefully numbered until assembly time. Remember, if you pull out the old lifters - keep them in order.
