The early EV's (up to '94 I think) were done with Westy conversions. They also used smaller engines and more trouble-prone transmissions AFAIK. In 1999 the EV went to a "panel truck" side, which removed the rear window on the driver's side. A major aesthetic boo-boo IMO. My wife and I wrestled with the idea of getting a '98 EV prior to getting our Syncro. Sitting in the EV is what caused my wife to have the epiphany that opened up the possibility of getting a VW camper in the first place.
