In fact the toxics are primarily hydrogen-- the natural by product of charging a battery. One note of caution, however; Hydrogen in concentration in a sealed chamber with a spark = booom! I'm not privy to how the Vanagon battery box is designed (my '89 is coming next week) but one should be careful to ensure that a vent to atmosphere (as opposed to the interior of the van) is available. In either case, it means your battery box is not sealed as it is supposed to be... that means you could be getting a lung full of the toxics that are gassed off when the battery is charging... seal it.
