We have no idea what could be released in trace amounts, but the main
byproduct of the charging process is hydrogen gas, which burns quite nicely
(no, just like gasoline, it is not explosive unless contained)This is why
the batteries are vented to the outside in Westies (stoves, etc.). Hydrogen
is not hazardous to breathe, we do it with every breath, cradle to grave.
