Subject:      Greasy residue in Propane fitting

I recently installed the correct regulator on my propane tank. When
reinstalling the brass t-fitting to the regulator outlet I noticed a gob of
grease like material inside. I cleaned it out but I can't imagine where it
came from. Can these propane tanks be contaminated somehow? I am still having
the fridge go out occasionally even when sitting in the driveway and wonder
if this crud has something to do with it.
