yeah, I forgot to mention that VW changed the setup around 87-89?. Both the high side and low side of the AC used to be on the back of the compressor. Bentley manual shows it this way (with a easy to miss footnote about the move of the high side behind the panel on the wall).

Perhaps Bentley has correct wiritng diagrams for you?
