Petroleum jelly? That sounds like it would attract a lot of dirt.

I have really good luck with products from McGuire's or The Wax Shop. They are about twice the other products at your typical FLAPS, but the results are much more long-lasting and the quality and reputation of both companies is very good.

I use some stuff called "Back-to-Black" from McGuire's on my bumpers, grills, and black plastic parts, and the results are very good. My side mirrors, vent louvers, and gas cap area all look brand new, and I only apply the stuff about once a month.
