Been there, done that!

Assuming that the switch or other electrical problems are not the cause, the motor and lifting mechanism are integral, and the mechanism is prone to failure.

The stock power window mechanism raises the window via a cable and sliding bracket. Sometimes the plastic guide(s) that the cable runs in break, which releases tension and causes the cable to then wind incorrectly and jam. This can have the unfortunate effect of locking the window in one position when it happens. You can temporarily unfasten the window from it's carrier and place a piece of wood inside the door to hold the window in the closed position until you replace the motor. (which I did)

You can either buy OEM replacement window motors/cables or aftermarket, worm screw replacements (ElectricLife for VW Caravelles). I went with the latter on my '87 passenger door, as they are less expensive and in theory a better design. However, these mount in the upper part of the door, behind the stock speaker location, and you may have to devise a way to mount the motor in such a way as it does not interfere with the speaker. The stock window motor that uses cables is mounted in the lower part of the door.

Also, I note that the passenger window moves up and down more slowly than my still-original driver's door window, so you might want to consider the stock design for that reason.
