If memory serves, early model, air-cooled vanagons in the 49 states required a catalytic converter but did NOT require an O2 sensor; however, California models did require both the cat and sensor. (49-state vans also used points and condenser, whereas California had electronic ignition.

The sensor is in the exhaust piping, not the cat, however, so it's still a mystery to me why California models are listed as having a unique cat.

I'm going to order the 22918 and assume it will work just fine.
