Dave, Sammy, et al...

You see, this is why we here in Hawaii don't feel sorry for you guys on the mainland (the REALLY Big Island, as we cal it)... you guys get to travel anywhere you want in this lovely country of ours (and get to go to vw roundups, etc.) while we are stuck here on our island. True we have beautiful beaches, amazing rainforests, and 14,000 foot peaks to visit, but we're limited to a place the size of Connecticut (quite large for an island, but still...). Plus your gas is cheaper... or was until recently. So jealousy works both ways. On the other hand it's a lot more pleasant here come February (and no, I don't want to trade, just a little compassion I'm after). It's just that wet ride to San Francisco that bothers me...

On, or around October 1st, we will be driving across America. From the G.Washington to the Golden Gate Bridge, I-80 all the way. This roadtrip is intended, in part, as a re-enactment of John MePhee's geologic journey across America, as recounted in his remarkable book, "Annals of The Former World". Will attempt to stop at each roadcut on I-80, as described by McPhee, collecting rock samples at each location for later facetting and polishing. If there are any other cross country trekkers interested in joining us, we would love the company. Rock hammer not required. Rocks in your head, a must. Please respond by p-mail, if interested. Cheers, Dave Gunning, (Graduate Gemologist), & Sammy da Dog. Lovell, ME 04051

P.S. Will be traveling w/ spare parts, tools and the willingness to stop for any disabled Vanagons, along the way. Little ole ladies driving Nash Ramblers, too. Sticker not required.
