And Troy makes yet another fuel-metering related point.

A vacuum-related leak can cause a myriad of failings. Vacuum leaks can be tough to find for a non-dedicated novice mechanic...but with a can of carbuator cleaner, you can find a leak...

Get the van running "normally" (post start-fail-restart). Use the carburetor cleaner to spray each of the vacuum tubes/joints sequentially. Wherever a tube meets a joint is usually the most suspect place. Spray there, and listen to the idle. When you hit a leaking joint, you will hear a change in the idle, often UP in idle. You must repair/replace the suspect fitting.

It is surprising how a small leak can cause a large problem, but your fuel-metering system works on the assumption that ALL (I repeat ALL) air entering the combustion chamber has gone through the air flow meter (AFM) just aft of the air cleaner.

Good catch, Troy.

My Agenda: Vanquish Suburban Sprawl. My Methods: Revitalize mature urban towns. Champion mass transit and fast Internet service. Demand replacement of archaic, "separationist" zoning laws with neo-traditional mixed-use zoning. The Result: Exceptional living/working alternatives; restrained sprawl; our children inherit walkable, beautiful, interlinked towns. Find out more at http://www.cnu.org

this is going to be a long shot, but... there is a hiose running from a horn looking thing in the engine compartment. The hose runs to an L shaped black tube about the size of a quarter. The tube connects the hose to the engine block itself. My vanagon has a similar problem. On mine you start the van, it dies, start it again and rev for a sec and your off. You might wanna check that tube, cause mine was broken and it didn't deliver whatever is going through that hose. The hose is a clear one, mine has a kind of carpet like sheet over it and there is a metal end to it that connects to that black tube.
