You're the nice J.Peters, right? Kewl....
You are right on track with the compression check. If your motor otherwise
has good compression, it will point you to the correct cylinder(s). In my
experience, even the filthiest lifters will EVENTUALLY pump up after 10-15
minutes of driving. Adjust your valves per Bentley, Haynes, or Boston Bob.
Go for a spin, and wait for them to pump up.
Lifters, however don't usually make a knocking sound...more like a TACK,
TACK, TACK, TACK, TACK TACK, TACK, TACK, TACK. A knocking sound THACK-A,
THACK-A, THACK-A, THACK-A is upper end bearings. A deep, THOCK, THOCK,
THOCK, THOCK is lower end. A main bearing can be quiet, or can sound like
all hell breaking loose, depending on severity and location of the bearing.

My Agenda: Vanquish Suburban Sprawl.
My Methods: Revitalize mature urban towns. Champion mass transit and fast
Internet service. Demand replacement of archaic, "separationist" zoning
laws with neo-traditional mixed-use zoning.
The Result: Exceptional living/working alternatives; restrained sprawl; our
children inherit walkable, beautiful, interlinked towns. Find out more at

OK here it goes.
My 80 vanagon has a terrible knock! This occured after it sat for a couple
days. (Back in July 11) Had the heads done in Nov 99.
I took some advice from the list and replaced a couple of supposed bad
lifters, I might have changed the wrong ones, because its still knocking.
Now, is there a way to tell where the bad lifter (if that is the case) is
located?
I tried listening with a stethascope (SP) even a huge screwdriver, but I
can't tell where the knock is coming from.
If I do a compression check, would the reading tell me which hyd lifter is
bad?
I haven't tried the ATF/MMO trick yet, but I need advice.
I can't see the forest because of the trees.
Its also too hot in Sacramento to be outside wrenching
on the van.
TIA,
Rick
