I just put in a set of the Bosch Platinum Plus Four plugs (they don;t need top be gapped). $6 each, but the Vanagon seems to start easier and idle a little smoother. In fact, when the van is cold, I can turn the key on to pressurize the fuel system, then literally "bump" the starter and it starts right up - I was amazed the first time. When warm, it starts about like normal. (maybe a few less revolutions of the starter)

Drove all day in stop and go traffic yesterday in LA with no ill side effects. They seem to be working quite well. Now for the cap, rotor, and timing check next weekend... (wanted to test the plugs alone first)
