Subject: how to identify engine
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

hello

i have an 83.5 westy that I purchased recently. in the records the PO gave me, I discovered the engine has been replaced. On a receipt: "1 85 VW VANAG Engine $995.00" from "hotline foreign + truck parts" in Littleton, CO.

1- how can I identify what sort of engine is indeed inside my van?

2- what is most likely to have been "replaced" when this engine was put in? what sorts of things should i look for?

my concern is in ordering parts and such - the '85 and '83.5 were different in many respects (?)

3- how many engine types in '85?

4- would a STEBRO fit this application, is the '84 engine the problem or the whole van?

thank you for any help, aaron in eau claire with "westy" my '83.5 westy and "subie" the '91 subaru and a fleet of bridgestone bicycles
