Many thanks to all contributors on this thread. I never actually introduced myself as a newbie to the list, but a belated hello to all of you out there. That last mail from Andrew Grebneff seems to describe the symptoms of the problem down to a tee. There is another problem, but I'll put in a separate mail for that. It's a variation on the existing oil light saga.
