The alloys would have a thicker mounting pad which (I surmised) requires longer lug bolts and longer wheel studs.

Assuming that you are talking about a 2wd Vanagon, you will need to install longer wheel studs in the rear. The fronts would be a simple matter of swapping lug bolts from one van to the other. You didn't mention what kind of alloys you have. However, most alloy wheels will almost always require longer bolts/studs.
