when i replaced mine, my local vw expert pointed out to me that there are
two different struts that should be installed for the rear hatch; the strut
nearer the wiper should be different (stronger) than the one opposite it.
it's supposedly described this way in whatever manual he was using to look
up the part numbers for the struts.
