This should be the last word on hatch struts. In some year I don't remember, VW changed the struts so one side is stronger than the other so the hatch will stay in different positions or not go all the way up so shorter people can reach it. Also handy for leaving it open when camping for ventilation and bear access. I got mine last year at Camelback VW in PHX and with the internet discount, they weren't much more than The Bus Depot, but then I didn't know about the list vendors back then. And yes, it is hard to close, and they are VW OEM so can't blame it on Ron.
