Mark, fellows and fellaws: When I tried on both new struts delivered by TBD, even I had problems closing the hatch. So, I checked both old struts and selected the strongest one (try with one at a time, and see which one holds the door best). Then I used one of the new struts in place of the old one removed combining strengths. Hatch will remain open and will close with one hand. When we setup the rear hatch tent, since I was letting the kids sleep inside the van, after checking everything I slip my PVC security holder over the struts to assure it would not close on someone head, the pipes never engaged the struts.
