Before renting the U-haul dolly, try your van on it first. I've found the front wheel stops are too high to clear the body when the wheels drop into the well. I would not tow with the rear forward as it can become a little unstable. BTDT. To keep from damaging the transmission, I would unbolt the rear drive shafts from the wheel flanges.

I am using a U-hual to move across country and will be towing my Westfalia (Auto trans). U-hual offers a dolly that you drive two wheels up on. Can I back the Westy up on that thing and tow it backwards - if yes do I keep the steering wheel locked or no. OR do I need the car carrier that I drive the entire van on?
